Dieting

Dieting is often seen as a complicated system of planning meals around certain foods that are supposed to be healthy while depriving ourselves of a lot of the foods that we like to eat. This is an outdated view of dieting, but one which, thanks to successive advertising campaigns over the decades, still seems to hold sway in the general view of what a diet must consist of to be successful. Of course as the years have gone by, dieting experts have learned much more about successful dieting to the extent that those old, outmoded dieting ideas are now being challenged. Here we’ll take a look at a modern day approach to dieting and how it is now viewed as a much more natural and easily acceptable process. One of the longest known rules about dieting and one which will always remain incontestable is that in order to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. This may sound like common sense and it is!

However, not all calories are equal in the grand scheme of dieting. For a weight loss diet to be successful, you have to make sure that your calorie intake comes from the right sources. Of course, not all diets are designed for losing weight. There are diets for general health, diets to gain weight for people who have suffered malnutrition or have lost too much weight following surgery or illness and diets for fitness, exercise and bodybuilding. Each has its own set of rules which, while relatively flexible also encompass some common ground.

The common theme running through all diets is that the nutrients that your body needs should come from fresh, wholesome food. This means that all processed, ready prepared and junk foods and snacks as well as canned or bottled fizzy or artificially flavoured drinks are off the menu. They all contain high levels of unhealthy fats, salt, sugar as well as artificial preservatives, flavourings and colourings. All of these things are counter-productive with respect to a healthy diet.

To be truly effective, ingredients such as fresh vegetables, lean meat, fish, whole grains, fruit and plenty of plain water should comprise any healthy diet. If you need to boost any vitamin or mineral group that you may not get from your food, you can easily include health supplements to achieve this. To add flavour and interest to your food, the addition of herbs and spices is an excellent way to really improve your gastronomic experiences. In this case, your food will naturally be low in unhealthy saturated fats and high in valuable nutrients and antioxidants to help you ward off illness and improve fitness levels.

In fact, when you make the switch from processed, junk food to healthy, natural food, the transformation in your health and fitness levels will be little short of amazing. You’ll find that you can still eat good sized, interesting, varied and satisfying meals that your body will thank you for by repaying you with vastly improved health levels. This is what is known as providing the right kind of calories for your body’s health.

So now we know that by providing the right kinds of nutrients in our diet, we can improve our health. To lose weight, we simply ensure we burn more calories than we consume. To gain weight, we do the opposite by consuming more of the right kind of calories than we burn through exercise. To maintain a healthy weight, we simply ensure that we balance our calorie intake with the amount we burn through exercise. Diets are really that simple!
